In the early 1980s, the former Gary Rescue Mission ceased operations, leaving homeless men in the Northwest Indiana region without support.
In response, the late Reverend James A. Anderson, alongside his congregation at the Washington Street Church of God, other local congregations, neighborhood associations, and concerned citizens, took on the challenge of reopening a shelter for unhoused men.
With funding from the City of Gary and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), on March 16, 1986, Brothers' Keeper, Incorporated opened its doors at its current location, which features a dormitory, a fully equipped kitchen, shower facilities, as well as office and dining areas.
The facility accommodates men aged 18 and older.
Today, the legacy of Reverend Anderson continues through the efforts of Brothers' Keeper's current Executive Director, W. Isaac Mootye, the Board of Directors, dedicated staff, and a network of churches, foundations, partnerships, and community members.
